The VEF Culture Palace, like the Academy of Science, is another relic of Soviet architecture that seemed like a good idea at the time. Regardless, today it stands as one of the premier cultural institutions of the city, hosting theatre, musical, and other various cultural events. Opened in 1960, the Cultural Palace was once funded by the state-fun VEF (State Electrical Engineering Factory), but after many changes in the 1990s, the Riga City Council took over the Culture Palace in 2002, ensuring partial annual financing.
