Amulets, charms and outright witchcraft are still popular today - though less so than they were at the dawn of mankind and at least early man had the excuse that he didn't know any better. Still, the story of medical from the very earliest days right up to the 21st century is fascinating enough to draw 40,000 or so through the doors of Riga's Pharmacy Museum every year, to see some of the 200,000 artefacts on display. The Medieval section is as satisfyingly gruesome as the name suggests, while the very roots of modern medical science are explored in the 18th-19th century section. More up to date, there is information about the Soviet space missions, in which Latvian medics were invited to contribute research and expertise.
