Welcome, Dr. President
The Latvian people have elected a new leader, and he goes by the name of Dr. Zatlers. As of last week, the new Latvian President is Valdis Zatlers, 52, a leading medical doctor who has headed several medical organisations throughout his career.
President Zatlers is the third president of independent Latvia since 1991, and is replacing former President Vaira Vike-Freiberga. Running against him was former constitutional court judge Aivars Endzins, whom he beat 58 to 40. However, in Latvia the position of president is not as powerful as in other countries like the U.S. or France, as the president holds only some legislative powers, and is mainly the representative of Latvia abroad. Nevertheless, we hope that the doctor can deliver some healing medicine to Latvia's problems.
