The ice skating rink, right in the middle of Riga's Old Town, is probably the number one reason to visit Riga in the winter months (the others being hotel discounts and fewer tourists). Don't worry if you're horrible at skating - the rental skates (though incredibly cheap) would make Oksana Baiul break several bones. Just disregard the twelve year olds with their own skates who will undoubtedly make you look inept if you even attempt to race them, and have some simple, childhood fun, no matter what your age. There's something to be said about being an adult and spending an evening ice-skating outdoors, stomach full of warm beer (we don't endorse drinking and skating but recommend it highly), spinning around to songs that haven't been on Western airwaves in at least two decades. Good times.
