Globuss

Is this still here? I heard there was a big fire at a place called Globuss. Would be sad if this shop were gone.

Stockmann

Very impressive store. Unlike some stores in the Baltic's this one has clerks who ask you if you need help. The quality of merchandise is excellent and if a person is so inclined, a respectable pizza store is on one side and a movie theater on the other. It seems both places are convenient for an out of towner to find a companion while in Riga.

Riga Central Market

Such a cool place to see, and you can always find bargains and lots of weird things you wouldn't find anywhere else - perfect for unique gifts!

Well, nothing wrong with it, I just wonder how the people in Latvia with such low incomes can afford Armani and other big brands. ;-]

Riga Central Market

Even if you don't buy anything, this is a great spot to go... being part of Riga since 1930, I got all kinds of warm fuzzy feelings being there surrounded by locals. I didn't buy much, but I did get postcards (of course) that were made by a local merchant (each was unique) and a couple of stamped pewter pieces clearly made for tourists, along with a couple of really unusual rocks that aren't in America--got those for a lapidary I know. Definitely go if you have a chance. The merchants were a little eager to get my business since of course I was perceived as rich (even though I took one of those 12 euro flights there and my total budget for 3 months of eating, traveling, etc. was $1300), but they also took my polite no thank yous with stride.

I've been looking for a comprehensive Latvian-English/English-Latvian dictionary for months here in California. Within 5 minutes of entering this fantastic internet bookshop, I had found and purchased the exact product I'd been searching for so long! Liels paldies!! :))

D'Artanjans

During my Foreign Service assignment in Riga (2000-2002), I lived in Berga Bazaars Passage where d'Artanjans is located. I befriended Cyril Prono, the owner, through my frequent visits to his delectable shop and always would pick up several cheeses and pate, then have coffee/croissant with Cyril on his charming outdoor patio. He loved my "Death by Chocolate" cookies which I would drop off occasionally as a treat. Sharon O'Neal, Asheville, NC

Riga Central Market

Really cool big open marketplace. Riga Central Market is worth seeing just as a tourist sight, but then of course you can always find some cheap shopping here as well - it's definitely worth checking out.
