In a city that is itself pretty much a historic monument, it's not surprising to find so many buildings with stories to tell. But the building that is now Benjamin's has a tale that is more illustrious than most. It was built in the 1870s for the Pfab family, who lived there until their fortunes and health began to fail more than half a century later. It was bought by Emilija and Antons Benjamins, who went on to found first a newspaper and then a magazine, which brought power, influence and cash through their doors. They were so highly thought of in society that they regularly entertained ministers and diplomats, and to shape the government of their day.
